]]> UFI Filters confirms leadership in filtration systems for Formula 1, supplying 9 out of 10 teams /en/blog/uncategorized/ufi-filters-confirms-leadership-in-filtration-systems-for-formula-1-supplying-9-out-of-10-teams/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 07:20:40 +0000 /?p=12864
  • Nine out of ten teams present in Formula 1 racing use UFI Filters filtration systems to guarantee reliability and safety for the single-seaters
  • Each car is fitted with around fifteen UFI filter elements, which perform essential functions in the fuel and lubrication circuits of the combustion engine, in the hybrid component and the hydraulic systems of the brakes, and in DRS and steering
  • Experience in Formula 1 and other motorsport categories, such as the WEC and MotoGP, makes UFI Filters an indispensable partner for manufacturers in the transition to new forms of mobility

UFI Filters, a leading international group in the field of filtration, thermal management and technologies for the development of hydrogen mobility, has cemented its position as a top producer of filtration systems by supplying nine of the ten teams competing in the 2024 Formula 1 season, which starts on 2 March with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The announcement is a prestigious recognition of the technologies developed by the High-Tech Division of UFI Filters, founded in 1999, and for the company, which has seen a continuous series of successes in the motorsport’s top category since 1978.

In Formula 1, UFI Filters does not limit itself to providing teams with oil, air and petrol filters. The complexity of today’s racing cars also demands up to fifteen filter elements in a car. In total, UFI produces around 8,000 such F1 filters annually.

Tailor-made solutions

For Formula 1, each filter is tailor-made for the needs of the different teams, with customised solutions provided in terms of size and materials used (which can include medical aluminium, carbon fibre and titanium). Their design requirements are the result of a co-design process between technicians in UFI Filters’ High-Tech Division and the individual racing teams. Often, during the course of the season, updates and modifications to the filters are also requested by the teams, based on the developments gradually introduced in the cars.

The filters used for the cars can be subdivided, according to their location.

  • Filters for combustion engines are located in the air intake, in the fuel supply and lubrication circuits. These are high-tech filters, which must not only trap dust and chips, but also any contaminants that may form in the special petrol used in Formula 1. The engine oil circuit also requires adequate protection: in addition to the main filter, there are secondary filter elements, and several ‘last chance filters’, which act on the recovery pumps.
  • The filters in the hydraulic circuits play an essential role in driver safety. Their presence in the systems that preside over the hydrodrive, the activation of the mobile rear wing (the DRS) and the braking circuit are fundamental.
  • The hybrid system with which the single-seaters are equipped, involves the presence of an energy-storage battery, the temperature of which must remain within an optimal range: dielectric fluids are used for its cooling, the filtration of which is guaranteed by UFI Filters.

Not just Formula 1

UFI Filters has accumulated a great deal of experience in motorsport, starting as early as the second half of the 1970s. Today, UFI Filters filtration systems are present not only in Formula 1, but also in many other motorsport categories. In particular, in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) they are on board the Ferrari 499P, the winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours 2023, and the 296 GT3, as well as Lamborghini and Isotta Fraschini Hypercars. UFI Filters also supplies the heat exchanger for the front electric axle of the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 6 LMH, which increases the efficiency and reliability of the system. This is proof of the advanced technologies developed by UFI Filters, which is not only a leader in filtration systems, but also plays an significant role in Thermal Management, an area of increasing importance due to relevance of e-axle temperature management.

UFI Filters are also used by all Formula 2 and American IndyCar single-seaters built by Dallara.

In motorcycling, UFI Filters supplies its products to MotoGP (for Aprilia and KTM), Moto 2, Moto 3 and Superbike.

Italian pride

¡°It was 1978¡±, recalls Giorgio Girondi, Chairman of the UFI Filters Group, ¡°when UFI Filters won its first Grand Prix in Great Britain with Carlos Reutemann’s Ferrari 312 T3, inaugurating a long series of triumphs. Since then, through sacrifice, dedication and passion, we have been able to develop customised solutions for the needs of nine out of ten Formula 1 racing teams. In light of this, we are continuing towards our goal of winning all the teams within the next two seasons. This is a source of great pride for our company, which is increasingly perfecting the advanced technologies that will also characterise the important transition which the automotive industry is undergoing¡±.

At the end of summer, an engine air filter can be particularly dirty due to the dry weather, long journeys on dusty roads, or accumulated insect and pollen residue. A dirty and clogged filter can significantly reduce the air flow to the engine, compromising its performance and increasing fuel consumption. As such, it is important to change the engine air filter in autumn to ensure optimum operation.

What is the engine air filter?

The air filter is a fundamental component for optimising performance, fuel economy and ensuring a long service life for a car or commercial vehicle’s engine. This oft-neglected component plays various key roles in vehicle performance:

  1. Protecting the engine: the filter captures particles of dirt and debris present in the air, preventing them from entering the intake system. This helps prevent wear and the accumulation of damaging deposits on the inner surfaces of the engine components, such as the valves, pistons and combustion chambers.
  2. Improved performance: a clean flow of air without obstructions is essential for correct engine operation, as it improves combustion efficiency and vehicle performance. Correct combustion also means better acceleration, improved responsiveness, and greater power.
  3. Improved fuel efficiency: poor power when accelerating, caused by a restriction in the nominal air flow required in the combustion chamber due to a clogged filter, will cause the driver to press harder on the accelerator, resulting in increased in fuel consumption.

What are the consequences of a clogged air filter?

If the air filter is not regularly replaced, this can lead to various consequences including:

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Premature wear on the engine and other components
  • Clogging of valves and injectors
  • Excessive noise and potential engine seizure
  • Foul-smelling exhaust fumes due to uncontrolled combustion
  • Unstable idle and unexpected stalling

?

There are three types of engine air filter.

The most common engine air filter types on the market are:

  1. Paper engine air filters. These are composed of pleated filter paper able to retain particles of different dimensions, which is more sensitive to the humidity level of the air. They tend to clog up more quickly than other types, hence requiring more frequent changes.
  2. Cotton engine air filters. These use cotton filter material treated with special oils to improve its efficiency. They are generally used in motorsport and can be cleaned and reused multiple times, thus reducing waste, however frequent cleaning will degrade their filtration performance over time.
  3. High-performance engine air filters, such as those produced by UFI Filters. They are designed to improve the lifespan, power and efficiency of the engine.ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

UFI Filters manufactures two types of air filter with specific materials:

    1. FormulaUFI.Cell, made from cellulose combined with synthetic fibres to maximise its mechanical stability, reduce pressure drops and, thanks to the hydrophobic treatment, increase its resistance to moisture, thus guaranteeing a longer service life. UFI’s filters are also flame-resistant, generally class F1. They can be combined with pre-filters in unwoven fabric to increase the solid-particle retention capacity.ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼
    2. FormulaUFI.EXTREME, a 100% synthetic filtration medium with additives that guarantee the impermeability of the filter and increase its service life. An example is UFI MULTITUBE, the revolutionary air filter made from hydrophobic fibres which guarantees improved fluid dynamics, decreasing air flow resistance and minimising pressure losses, so much so that it guarantees great power availability in terms of horsepower. This material also offers unparalleled flame resistance, achieving F1 classification, the highest available, on the DIN53438 ¨C ISO standard ¨C test which determines the level of flammability of commercial materials. ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

When does the air filter need to be changed?

The engine air filter change frequency may vary depending on driving and ambient conditions, as well as the type of filter used. In general, it is recommended to consult the vehicle manual for the manufacturer’s specifications. In any case, typical intervals are around every 10,000-20,000 km, or else once a year. However, if you drive in particularly dusty conditions or use a lot of dirt roads, more frequent changes may be necessary.

When changing your filter, it is important to put your trust in a manufacturer of premium original spare parts such as UFI Filters, which is chosen by 95% of the world’s vehicle manufacturers. The quality of the original equipment is the same for the spare parts in the aftermarket catalogue, which offers greater than 98% coverage of the European fleet.

Lack of acceleration and black smoke from the exhaust are symptoms of combustion problems. Therefore, these are the first warning signs which indicate the need to perform maintenance on the engine air filter.

The working environment for trucks is, indeed, rather harsh ¨C both for those used for logistics, which do high mileages, and for those working in the construction or earth-moving sector, which operate in very dusty areas. The air filter gets dirty more quickly, necessitating the use of sensors to measure the differential pressure between the air entering and leaving the filter to determine the level of clogging. Some trucks are equipped with a warning light on the dashboard which indicates when the air filter is clogged. Some trucks, on the other hand, are equipped with a mechanical filter clogging indicator in the intake system (optical pop-up). When the mechanical indicator or warning light comes on, the vehicle may not yet be exhibiting obvious issues, but if the problem is ignored it could lead to poor acceleration and black smoke from the exhaust, with consequent poor fuel economy.

For this reason, the air filter is essential for a long service life of the engine and to guarantee optimum power. The air filter indeed retains dust, debris, sand, pollen and insects, which could obstruct correct combustion.

ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

What are the symptoms of a clogged air filter?

Reduced power, lower acceleration, difficulty in driving correctly during sharp acceleration or with heavy loads, excessive noise, risk of engine stalls due to lack of air supply, foul-smelling exhaust fumes, right through to dangerous overheating of the engine itself. All this translates into an evident increase in fuel consumption, as the clogging of the filter causes a reduction in power, with the tendency for the driver to accelerate harder.

Failure to change the air filter for long periods can cause premature wear of the engine. For this reason, it is important to perform maintenance as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and in any case at no more than 25,000 km, and it is essential to use filters of equivalent quality to the original equipment, such as those from the UFI Filters catalogue, manufactured using the exclusive FormulaUFI materials. UFI filters are produced in partnership with the engineering teams of the main original equipment brands, in accordance with fluid dynamic studies and tests.

What are the benefits offered by UFI Filters¡¯ engine air filters?

¨C Constant distribution of air flow inside the complete module
¨C Elimination of water droplets, increasing the lifespan and effectiveness of the filter itself, thanks to:

  • Hydrophobic treatments applied to the materials
  • Centrifugal force produced by the air circulating inside the module.

¨C Filtration of the smallest particles, which remain trapped in the pre-filter and in the filter media.
¨C Complete filtration systems with built-in soundproofing systems.
¨C Filter media developed and manufactured internally according to two specific formulations:

  1. Cell is a material made of cellulose fibres mixed with synthetic fibres to maximize filter duration and limit pressure drops.
  2. Extreme: a 100% synthetic filtration medium with additives that guarantee filter impermeability and increases the service life of the filtering element.

¨C? Minimal flammability risk: class F1 fire-proof filters, to ensure greater safety.

Summer is upon us, and many motorists are preparing to set off on their holidays. One of the things UFI Filters recommends for a safe and peaceful journey is changing the oil filter.

But what exactly is the oil filter, and why is it so important to change it regularly? Here are some useful tips from UFI Group’s technicians for maintenance of your vehicle.

What is an oil filter, and why is it so important?

The engine oil filter is a component of your car engine¡¯s lubrication system. Its main task is to remove impurities and particles of dirt present in the engine oil in order to keep the engine clean and correctly lubricated. Without an oil filter, dirt particles created by the movement of mechanical parts, as well as deteriorated or poor-quality oil, could lead to rapid damage to the engine, reducing its lifespan and increasing the chance of breakdowns. It therefore plays a fundamental role in protecting the component parts of the engine from corrosion and allowing its operation. Last but not least, it plays a crucial role in the management of the operating temperature, in order to prevent overheating of the engine due to friction between the components.

ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

How often should the oil filter be changed?

The oil filter, like any other vehicle component, has a limited lifespan and must be changed regularly to guarantee efficient engine operation. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend changing the oil filter every 15,000 km for petrol engines, and every 25/30,000 km for diesel engines.? If you drive in extreme conditions, such as dusty environments, or with frequent cold starts, or if you drive an older model vehicle, the oil filter may need to be changed more frequently, every 10,000 km. Nevertheless, vehicle manufacturers almost always recommend in their manuals that the filter be replaced at every oil change. Alternatively, if the vehicle is used infrequently, the oil filter can be changed once a year.

In particular, before setting off on a long journey such as your summer holidays, it is important to check the oil level, ensure that the filter has been recently changed, and have the vehicle serviced if necessary. This is because during long summer journeys, cars are subjected to greater stress than usual and the engine could need extra lubrication to work correctly.

When changing your oil filter, it is advisable to put your trust in a professional with quality OE-equivalent spare parts, guaranteed by the UFI and SOFIMA aftermarket catalogues.

ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

How do I know if an oil filter is beginning to get old or clogged?

  1. If you notice oil stains under the vehicle.
  2. If you notice engine overheating.
  3. If there is excessive oil consumption.
  4. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and remains lit.

ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

What types of oil filters are there?

UFI Filters supplies two types of oil filters: immersion oil filters and screw-on oil filters.

  1. Immersion oil filters are found inside a complete aluminium or plastic module. They are the most ecological solution, as they are composed only of a central structure made of recyclable plastic, around which the filter media is wrapped, held by two plates. UFI Filters develops filter media and manufactures them internally according to specific formulations named FormulaUFI. More specifically, the oil filters in UFI’s catalogue for light vehicles are available in FormulaUFI.Micron and FormulaUFI.CELL.

FormulaUFI.Micron is a synthetic fibre compound which guarantees the highest levels of efficiency with a filtration capacity of 50% down to 4 microns, is resistant to high pressures, and is suitable for modern Euro 6D Final engines. It is used, for example, in the 25.139.00 UFI and S 5139 PE SOFIMA filters for Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Tipo and Alfa Romeo Mito applications. Or 25.093.00 UFI and S 5093 PE for Opel brand vehicles, such as the Insignia.

FormulaUFI.CELL is a material made from cellulose combined with synthetic fibres to maximise the retention capacity and pressure resistance, and is used, for example, in the 25.083.00 UFI and
S 5083 PE SOFIMA filters for Fiat 500 X, Jeep Renegade and other Stellantis vehicles.

  1. External screw-on filters are generally composed of an outer metal structure in which the filter material is located, therefore the most traditional and long-standing filtration solution. They have a threaded end for coupling to the engine, generally near the lubrication pump. Examples include the 23.284.00 filter historically developed by UFI for Ferrari, and the 23.460.00 UFI, SOFIMA S3460 R, for Alfa Romeo and Lancia.

ÐÂÀûÌåÓýluck18¡¤(Öйú)¹ÙÍøµÇ¼

All UFI and SOFIMA filtration solutions can be viewed in the Aftermarket online catalogues www.ufi-aftermarket.com and www.sofima-aftermarket.com, which contain 356 product references for car and light commercial vehicle applications.
